VANCOUVER KINGSWAY TO TAKE LEGAL ACTION
Here at the Campaign to De-elect David Emerson we have been receiving many e-mails regarding the desire to take legal action on the issue. Our role is to provide a vehicle for discussion and activites to protect our Democratic Values and Institutions. As such we have agreed to post information on this subject with contact information on the interested parties. You will find one such e-mail reprinted with the senders permission.
We look forward to receiving more e-mails on the subject and will post them as they are received.
As voter in the Vancouver/Kingsway riding, I am very concerned about Mr.
Emerson's decision to switch parties. I voted for Emerson, in the advanced polls in fact, so I feel particularly disenfranchised: he nullified the vote of all who marked his name on their ballot.
Attendance at the community meetings and rallies at the constituency office have been encouraging and cathartic. Now, it is the time to ratchet up the
pressure: legal action needs to be taken.
After discussions with a litigation lawyer, I am confident that viable legal avenues are available to the constituents of Vancouver/Kingsway.
Just filing a suit with the courts will show Emerson his constituents are not taking his move lightly. It will also garner alot of media attention, further increasing the pressure.
But the time to act is soon, while the pressure is still on Emerson and Harper.
If you are interested in working towards a legal option, please get in touch with me so we can arrange a meeting and co-ordinate our efforts.
I believe that any legal action should be pursued in a non-partisan
manner:
particularly important will be representation from people who voted for Emerson but a show of support from all parties will be key. A coalition of representatives from each of the four major parties (Liberal, NDP, Conservative and Green) would make a strong message.
Emerson's move is completely unprecedented and therefore any legal action will be unprecedented as well: we will be breaking new ground, which is exciting as well as challenging. There has been a breach of the democratic process, and we must not let it go unchallenged. Get in touch: as a group we can make a change!
Thanks.
