Say Goodbye David

As of tonight the dishonourable David Emerson will no longer hold the title of Member of Parliament for Vancouver-Kingsway. He has not served our constituency, nor our country, with distinction.

Floor crossing is but one attack on democracy. There have been too many in this last parliament. Citizens in this riding demonstrated in no uncertain terms that regular people can take control of the political agenda, that we can thwart bad plans and discipline politicians for their bad judgement.

This citizens-led movement won't disappear with the conclusion of Emerson's political career tonight. We will find new purpose and cause, and we will remain on guard for Canada.

Should Stephen Harper or any future prime minister believe they can get away with pulling an Emerson we'll be there to chase the scoundrels down. Lets continue our guard - a Harper Watch, if you will - for any signs of Harper pulling a Fortier - an undemocratic appointment of Emerson to the Senate and from there into Cabinet.

Vancouver-Kingsway Candidates Speak Out on Floor-Crossing

A recent all-candidates debate in Vancouver-Kingsway was attended by all candidates but the Conservative candidate who it would seem has decided to be as invisible in the riding as our missing-in-action member of parliament, David Emerson, has been.

The following video is of interest to Vancouver-Kingsway voters as it illustrates the positions of two leading candidates on the topic of floor-crossing and democracy. The Campaign to De-Elect David Emerson is a non-partisan, pro-democracy, citizens group which in keeping with its mandate will not endorse a particular candidate or party. We can however applaud any effort that any candidate or party undertakes to rid our political system of undemocratic politicians and loopholes that undermind our democracy.

Emerson Resigns: Won't Run

The Conservative Party has, finally, acknowledged that David Emerson will not run in the next election. Some may see this as a victory, but we do not. Voters in Vancouver-Kingsway never will get the opportunity to express their judgement on the duplicitous dealings of our missing in action member of parliament.

On February 6th 2006 Canadians were shocked to learn that David Emerson, a former Liberal cabinet minister who aggressively campaigned against the Conservatives, had entered into secret negotiations to switch his allegiance to the Conservatives less than 24 hours after being re-elected.

Vancouver-Kingsway electors quickly moved past anger to a rising determination to do something about the outrage pushed upon them, and quickly a grassroots citizen's movement formed to put pressure on Emerson to resign and run in a by-election in order to earn, not steal, our votes.

This Campaign to De-Elect David Emerson was always more about basic principles of democracy and less about Emerson the person. The value of one's vote is a bedrock principle without which democracy means nothing. As a country we have no business lecturing others if we do not respect the value of each and every vote.

Campaigns matter, policies matter, promises matter. Emerson campaigned on one set of policies and promises and then the very next day after being elected effectively promised his new master to support policies which were in many cases diametrically opposed to those he campaigned upon.

Stephen Harper and David Emerson conspired to violate the trust of electors not only in our riding as their unprincipled attack on democracy devalued the votes of all Canadians.

If there is a silver lining to this story it is the awe inspiring response from thousands of Vancouver area Canadians of all ages and political persuasion who came out to protest this attack on our democracy. Indeed from right across our country tens of thousands of Canadians expressed their support for our Campaign.

The past, and the future: 46,168 people voted in our riding in the last election and not a single person got what they voted for. But let that not discourage anyone from exercising their vote in future elections, for ultimately our voices were indeed heard.

In the next election we urge all eligible voters to come out in even greater numbers to cast their vote - for whatever party you support - and take an extra measure of pride when you drop that ballot in the box with the knowledge that individual Canadians can make a significant impact on politics armed with nothing more than their principles and voices.

Developing Story: Emerson to resign?

September 3, 2008: Various as yet unconfirmed reports indicate David Emerson will not run in the upcoming federal election. This site will carry a communique when an official statement has been released by Emerson.

The Campaign to De-Elect David Emerson has steadfastly called for Emerson to run again to allow electors the opportunity to indicate their displeasure with Stephen Harper and David Emerson's utter disregard for basic democratic principles. We would prefer Mr. Emerson stand for election and let the chips fall where they will.

Will Emerson Break Another Promise?

Promises, promises. In the winter election of 2006 David Emerson promised to be Stephen Harper's worst nightmare. The day after he was elected, Emerson broke that promise by entering into secret negotiations with Harper's party to cross the floor. Emerson now acts as our foreign minister, a department which routinely lectures other countries on their democratic practices. Imagine that.

Stephen Harper promised that he would only put elected members into cabinet. On the first day of his government he broke that promise by putting in one of his supporters as a non-elected Senator into the federal cabinet. Michael Fortier remains there today, making decisions that no one elected him to make.

As one of the first acts of his government, Harper also promised to adhere to a fixed election cycle, stating But fixed election dates stop leaders from trying to manipulate the calendar simply for partisan political advantage. Harper is now threatening to break that promise too.

David Emerson also promised to run again in Vancouver-Kingsway if he were to run at all.

I will either run in Kingsway or I won't run. David Emerson as reported by The Province, Thursday November 8 2007

The Campaign to De-Elect David Emerson expects Mr. Emerson to break this streak of broken promises by putting his name forward as a candidate in this riding so that voters here may finally have their say on broken promises and failed democracy.

Statement on Appointment of David Emerson to Foreign Affairs Post

Wednesday June 25, 2008

The Campaign to De-Elect David Emerson / Real Democracy reasserts our long-standing call for David Emerson to resign and run in a by-election in order that he may earn, if he can, a mandate from the people rather than steal one as he has done.

The Campaign deplores the actions of Prime Minister Harper, who has demonstrated repeatedly that he thinks nothing of the value of a citizen's vote. Having first seen fit to debase the votes of Vancouver-Kingsway through an undemocratic appointment of Emerson in February 2006, he has now further rewarded Emerson by naming him as our nation's foreign minister.

Canadians cannot feel proud having Emerson represent them on the world stage—someone who says one thing to voters on January 23 2006, only to secretly turn his back on them the very next day—world leaders take note.

Support for our continued vigilance remains strong within our riding and the Vancouver area at large. We continue to receive notes of support from across the country. While the passage of time has taken the point off the issue for now, we remain confident in the ability of Canadians to recognize this issue is one of fundamental importance, and fully expect voters will, without any urging from us, look at their next ballot from a very different perspective.

When required, the Campaign to De-Elect David Emerson stands ready to mobilize public opinion once again. We'll be there backed by the support of thousands of other concerned citizens who share our concern and continue to support our action on this issue of fundamental democracy.

Regrettably, Prime Minister Harper seeks to undermine core Canadian foundations by challenging the legitimacy of certain principles that most Canadians take for granted, such as representation by mandate of the people, and an elected cabinet. Today's appointments to cabinet of David Emerson and the unelected Michael Fortier serve to remind us all that our democratic system is under active attack by the current government.

Democracy, mandate, representation - these are not quaint abstract notions to be discarded when inconvenient. Defending the very meaning of one's vote is worth all our continued attention.

The Campaign to De-Elect David Emerson is a non-partisan group of regular people, from all walks of life and political persuasion, who believe in democracy and who believe that Canada needs to head down a path back to real democracy.

Still no Democracy for Vancouver Kingsway

Wednesday February 6, 2008

Its been two years since David Emerson turned his back on Vancouver-Kingsway voters. The Campaign to De-Elect David Emerson continues to call for Emerson to resign and run in by-election in order to earn, not steal, a mandate from the people.

Statement on Garth Turner, Wajid Khan "floor crossings"

Tuesday February 6, 2007

Exactly one year has past since David Emerson and Stephen Harper shocked the nation by engineering the conversion of Emerson, a Liberal cabinet minister, into a Conservative cabinet minister. Negotiations between Emerson and Harper started less than 24 hours after the last ballots were cast and counted in Vancouver-Kingsway. Citizens from all walks of life, cultures, and political affiliations rose up as one in protest of this opportunistic power grab and attack on Canadian democracy.

Wajid Khan defected from the Liberals to the Conservatives on January 5, 2007. Today MP Garth Turner, who was elected as a Conservative but subsequently kicked out of that party's caucus on October 18th, 2006, announced that he was crossing the floor, exchanging his forced independent status in order to join the Liberal caucus.

In each case voters did not, and have not, obtained the result they voted for. 46,168 electors in Vancouver-Kingsway, 52,044 electors in Mississauga-Streetsville, and 69,214 electors in Halton - over 167,000 Canadians have had their votes overturned by the actions of just a handful of men - (Stephen Harper, Stephane Dion, David Emerson, Wajid Khan and Garth Turner).

That's not real democracy in action, but elitism at its worst. Some politicians try to paint the situation as normal, implying that the system is what it is and can not be changed. We do not accept that.

The Campaign to De-Elect David Emerson and the non-partisan pro-democracy organization Real Democracy call upon parliamentarians to correct this noxious and undemocratic trend which has served only to further undermine citizen's trust in our form of government and electoral process. We urge Canadians to write to their parliamentarians and demand that they propose and pass floor-crossing legislation that would force members of Parliament to seek new mandates from their constituents in the event of a party switch.

Canada is a young country and our parliamentary traditions are subject to change. Canadians must not and need not ever accept the status quo as "the best that can be done".

Report: Emerson won't seek re-election

In today's Globe and Mail, this article by Gary Mason speculates that Emerson will not seek re-election, and suggests that Emerson will have to make his intentions known soon.

Campaign to De-Elect David Emerson steering committee member Mike Watkins discusses this report in some detail on his web-log.

The Campaign has been clear in its objectives since the start of this fight for real democracy:
  • We called for David Emerson to do the right thing - resign and run, as a Conservative, in the riding of Vancouver--Kingsway. Give back democracy to the 46,168 electors whose ballots he and Stephen Harper effectively stole.
  • We said we'd keep this fight going until Emerson resigned, or into the next general election if need be.
  • We said that what Emerson and Harper did can't be allowed to stand, or be repeated, therefore we would organize non-partisan public opposition to Emerson if he chose to run for office again. All politicians must be made to realize that citizens will not stand idly by while democracy is attacked by those lead us.

The Campaign to De-Elect Emerson continues to meet, work, and organize in support of our stated objectives. We'll be there if Emerson runs again, no matter where he runs. Count on it.

State of the Riding

Eight months later and Vancouver--Kingsway still does not have a properly elected member of parliament sitting on the government side of the house. Here in the riding, one of the places in Canada David Emerson does his utmost to avoid, the campaign continues to meet and hear from constituents that remain angry at how David Emerson and Stephen Harper thumbed their nose at Canadians and make a mockery of our democracy.

Over the summer De-Elect Emerson campaigners continued to hold the fort, albeit at a slightly reduced pace. Volunteers staged a protest at a political BBQ held at the ranch of Conservative Senator Gerry St. Germaine, attended by the who's-who of the Conservative Party, including that man of all faces, David Emerson. Another protest was held outside the Vancouver--Kingsway Conservatve EDA summer BBQ event where Emerson managed to remain hidden from the bulk of his constituents. Thousands of signatures from riding residents were delivered on giant petitions addressed to Stephen Harper annd David Emerson; neither graced the riding with a reply. Numerous meeting requests made at Emerson's constituency office have still to this day gone unanswered and unacknowledged. Hundreds of information posters have been placed around the riding over the summer; buttons distributed; flyers passed; conversations had and plans made.

Committed volunteers continued to keep pushing De-Elect David Emerson campaign lawn signs out to neighbourhoods around Vancouver, and with unflagging determination also replace those vandalized by Conservative Party supporters. One such person, caught red-handed in the act, even threatened one of our volunteers with physical harm! Perhaps Conservative Party of Canada Vancouver--Kingsway Electoral District Association president, Marilyn Brown, should keep a tighter rein on her 'people', before we are forced by circumstances to press for charges.

The on-going destruction of De-Elect Emerson Campaign signs might seem like a trivial affair, but not when its been going on for many months and has, for all appearances, the look of an organized attack on our right to free speech.

We are, after all, ordinary and peaceful citizens who are simply exercising our right to freedom of speech, and performing our duty as citizens to speak up against unjust practices and to make known to the general public violations against our democratic society.

On February 6th of this year, our riding - our friends and neighbours and 46,168 electors - had their rights to a fair, just, democratic election outcome ripped away by Emerson and Harper just as surely as they'd taken all the votes out back and thrown in the dumpster. Eight months later, the crime against Canada remains as wrong now as it was on the day we all became aware of it, and its our duty as citizens of this land to stand up for Canada and not let this happen again.

To that end the De-Elect Emerson Campaign does and will continue for however long Emerson sits on the side of the House of Commons he and Harper chose, instead of the side electors sent him to Ottawa. When next voters go to the polls the De-Elect Campaign will be there to remind voters of the precious value of their votes, and of the contempt for voters and democracy displayed by Emerson and Harper. David Emerson can fully expect that our efforts will be in high gear and fine form whenever, if ever, he next runs for office, no matter where in Canada that may be.

After all, no one expects Emerson will ever run again in Vancouver--Kingsway, despite any meek claims he has occasionally made to the contrary.

June 22, 2006

David, take the hint...

It seems like Emerson is always suprised at the opposition to his actions and ideas.

Trade Minister David Emerson, faced with mounting criticism of the new softwood lumber deal with the United States, says if the agreement falls apart it won't be his fault - and he wouldn't resign over it. In an interview with CTV Question Period on Sunday, Emerson acknowledged he's been surprised by the strength of opposition to the deal. Mr. Emerson shrugged off the notion that he might have to quit his job if the deal falls through, dismissing the suggestion with a laugh and curt "I don't think so." The Globe and Mail

Emerson ought to take the hint and get out of public life for good.

Town Hall Meeting - TONIGHT 7-9pm

Reminder - the first in a series of town hall meetings will be held tonight, with this first forum being held at Collingwood Neighbourhood House (second floor). Details in the post below.

June 12, 2006

Town Hall Meeting - Thursday June 22, 7-9pm

Brought to you by Real Democracy, the folks who organized the Walk for Democracy, a town hall meeting on Thursday June 22, 7-9pm, held at Collingwood Neighbourhood House.

Our MP-in-hiding was elected by many in this riding because of his support for specific policies -- many of these policies Emerson must now vote against, despite his campaign promises to the contrary. Our representative in parliament didn't consult with any of us before making this decision, but we certainly get to pay the price.

Any MP worth their salt would consult constituents before completely reversing positions on important policy matters, but we all know that Emerson has no intention of actually meeting with the public in an open forum.

Since Mr. Emerson won't do his job, the people simply will have to do it for him. On June 22nd come join us for a public forum at Collingwood Neighbourhood House, 5288 Joyce Street (1 block from the Joyce Street Skytrain Station / 4 blocks north of Kingsway) and add your voice to the discussion.

Views, concerns and issues uncovered during the forum will be documented in a formal report. We will ensure that riding residents' voices are heard in Ottawa, one way or another.

Help us advertise this event - distribute posters in your neighbourhood, schools and offices: print this poster and go! (Adobe PDF Format)

Tonights Main Event

Tonight we roast David Emerson, outside, while he carries on inside at the tony Vancouver Club (corner of Hornby and Hastings). Join anytime from 5:30 onward as we greet guests, and perhaps Emerson himself. No doubt the folks inside will laugh at us simple citizens outside in the rain, but we'll have the last laugh in time for we are on the right side of the issue.

We have mail!
Amazingly, even after all this time, our mailbag sees very little "pro Emerson" commentary, and what little that does trickle in tends to be infantile - not the sort of stuff Emerson would like to be associated with. Here's an example, received today, advocating suicide:

Perhaps Mr. Wardle is 'non-partisan' but he certainly isn't free from bias. His employer, Dakeryn Industries, is a member of the British Columbia Wholesale Lumber Association - the very same organization which is putting on the Emerson roast indoors this evening.

The plot thickens. Looking back in our mailbag we find another message from a Dakeryn dude:

Vancouver-Kingway residents had their votes stolen as effectively as if Emerson or Stephen Harper marched into the polling stations and walked out with the ballots under their arms.

Few in the riding consider it a laughing matter, Mr. Taylor.
