Town Hall Meeting - Thursday June 22, 7-9pm

Brought to you by Real Democracy, the folks who organized the Walk for Democracy, a town hall meeting on Thursday June 22, 7-9pm, held at Collingwood Neighbourhood House.

Our MP-in-hiding was elected by many in this riding because of his support for specific policies -- many of these policies Emerson must now vote against, despite his campaign promises to the contrary. Our representative in parliament didn't consult with any of us before making this decision, but we certainly get to pay the price.

Any MP worth their salt would consult constituents before completely reversing positions on important policy matters, but we all know that Emerson has no intention of actually meeting with the public in an open forum.

Since Mr. Emerson won't do his job, the people simply will have to do it for him. On June 22nd come join us for a public forum at Collingwood Neighbourhood House, 5288 Joyce Street (1 block from the Joyce Street Skytrain Station / 4 blocks north of Kingsway) and add your voice to the discussion.

Views, concerns and issues uncovered during the forum will be documented in a formal report. We will ensure that riding residents' voices are heard in Ottawa, one way or another.

Help us advertise this event - distribute posters in your neighbourhood, schools and offices: print this poster and go! (Adobe PDF Format)

Tonights Main Event

Tonight we roast David Emerson, outside, while he carries on inside at the tony Vancouver Club (corner of Hornby and Hastings). Join anytime from 5:30 onward as we greet guests, and perhaps Emerson himself. No doubt the folks inside will laugh at us simple citizens outside in the rain, but we'll have the last laugh in time for we are on the right side of the issue.

We have mail!
Amazingly, even after all this time, our mailbag sees very little "pro Emerson" commentary, and what little that does trickle in tends to be infantile - not the sort of stuff Emerson would like to be associated with. Here's an example, received today, advocating suicide:

Perhaps Mr. Wardle is 'non-partisan' but he certainly isn't free from bias. His employer, Dakeryn Industries, is a member of the British Columbia Wholesale Lumber Association - the very same organization which is putting on the Emerson roast indoors this evening.

The plot thickens. Looking back in our mailbag we find another message from a Dakeryn dude:

Vancouver-Kingway residents had their votes stolen as effectively as if Emerson or Stephen Harper marched into the polling stations and walked out with the ballots under their arms.

Few in the riding consider it a laughing matter, Mr. Taylor.

Roasting Emerson

Mark your calendars, for one of the most important social events of the year - well, of the next week at least - is upon us:

The Dis-Honourable David Emerson Roast
June 8th, Vancouver
Corner of Hastings and Hornby
5:30pm until we're done

While various fans and critics of the proposed softwood lumber deal with the U.S. continue to dog it out, one industry group has seen fit to honour David Emerson as “Lumberman of the Year” at their annual roast, despite him having left the lumber business years ago.

The people of Emerson’s riding have quite another opinion of duplicitous David and will hold a simultaneous roast of their own just outside industry’s celebrations at the haughty Vancouver Club.

Help spread the word: email your friends; talk to your neighbours; put up posters (PDF) and join us next Thursday evening for a night of fun, food and song.

Hobnobbing with Reynolds

On Thursday May 25, 2006 David Emerson, the infamous MP for Vancouver-Kingsway, was greeted by protesters as he entered the Fairmont Vancouver Hotel to attend a dinner in honour of John Reynolds, former Deputy Leader of the Conservative Party and now retired MP for West Vancouver--Sunshine Coast, who brokered the deal to entice Emerson into Stephen Harper's cabinet, against the clear wishes of riding voters.

Emerson arrived shortly after 6:30 and was greeted by over two dozen De-Elect Emerson campaigners who had assembled to carry on calling out for Emerson's resignation. The errant MP acknowledged the protesters with a blithe wave of the hand and quickly ducked inside.

"We never see Emerson in the riding, so we have to track him down at black tie events just to get a glimpse of our so-called representative in parliament," said Andrea Richardson, spokesperson for the De-Elect Emerson Campaign.

Jurgen Claudepierre, who has been protesting on street corners and at rallies every week since Emerson joined the Conservative government against the clear wishes of riding voters, commented "The guy just doesn't get it. This is a democracy. The people must decide who they want to represent them. The guy ran as a liberal. He has to resign and run again to earn a mandate."

Emerson will again hobnob with the black tie crowd on June 8th where he will be honoured as Lumberman of the Year at the 26th Annual B.C. Wholesale Lumber Association 'Roast'. The event takes place in the Grand Ballroom of the Vancouver Club 915 West Hastings Street.

The Campaign to De-Elect David Emerson has a special event planned for that same night. Details on the people's roasting of the dishonourable member of public will be available soon.

Emerson arrogance on display

David Emerson in a letter to a constituent reminds us again that he truly is clueless as to his role in representing our riding:

As I have stated on many occasions previously, I will continue that dialogue in earnest with all of my constituents - remaining accountable to them in the next federal election. David Emerson

First of all, The Campaign to De-Elect David Emerson must point out that Emerson isn't being honest with us. We have made a number of formal and informal requests for meetings with David Emerson. Most requests have been completely ignored; as reported in these pages, our formal request for a town hall meeting, designed to give Emerson the opportunity to be accountable to his constituents, was flatly rejected.

Of greater concern, Emerson continues to live under the illusion that he is accountable to no one except once every few years on election day. That he can do anything with complete impunity including breaking many committments and promises, and dropping support for policies and programs that he sold himself on.

Emerson was elected by the people of our riding to represent us, and to represent a certain set of views in the House of Commons. He was elected to defend Kyoto. He was elected to oppose participation in U.S. Ballisitic Missile Defense System participation. He was elected to support a real national child care system. He was elected to support the Aboriginal Accord. He was elected to support immigration.

Now, in each case, he is or will be doing the opposite of what most constituents in this riding elected him to do. When Emerson agreed to join the Conservatives, despite being elected just days before as a Liberal, he also explicitly agreed to vote against many programs and policies that he previously supported. Programs and policies that got him elected.

No one in this riding voted for that.

Whether or not one agrees with the stand Emerson took when he was elected, the crux of the matter is this: if our votes are to mean anything, elected members of parliament or provincial legislatures have to stand for something. Emerson, by his very action, stands for nothing.

Emerson works for some mythical constituency, but it isn't ours, and by his actions its been clearly proven that he has no intention of working for his constituents or representing their views.

The only way Emerson can clear his name is to resign and run again in a by-election to earn a legitimate mandate. Has he the guts, the true grit, if you will, to face the voters today?

The Campaign Continues

Campaign to De-Elect David Emerson continues call for Emerson to resign and run in by-election

For Immediate Release

May 8, 2006, Vancouver-Kingsway - On February 6th, David Emerson, re-elected as BC's most senior Liberal MP just a couple weeks prior, shocked the country when he arrived at Rideau Hall to join then Prime Minister-elect Stephen Harper's Conservative cabinet and caucus. That same day the country learned that Emerson had been in secret negotiations with Conservatives less than 24 hours after the final votes were counted here in Vancouver-Kingsway.

Since then thousands of riding residents have participated in protests, rallies and forums and have sent a uniform message to Emerson: resign and run in a by-election and earn a legitimate mandate.

Recently, after being forced by the presence of national media to accept a constituent's meeting request, Emerson met with one of the many disenfranchised voters of this riding. Emerson only agreed to do so only on the condition that the voter, Manuel Pereda, vowed to not demand for his resignation.

The Campaign to De-Elect David Emerson finds this price of admission far too high.

David Emerson was elected to serve the people of his riding, yet he refuses to engage with his constituents and legitimate community groups that seek his attention. Since he is unwilling to meet constituents without conditions, Emerson is unfit to represent Vancouver-Kingsway.

2 men, Harper and Emerson, secretly conspired to overturn the votes of 46,168 citizens. That's not real democracy and the undemocratic precedent they've set can not be allowed to stand.

It is the view of the Campaign that real change does not happen when important issues are put on the back burner only to silently run dry, and this we will not do. We will continue to keep the issue in the spotlight and pressure on Emerson at full boil for as long as it takes to bring back real democracy to the people of our riding.

The Campaign to De-Elect David Emerson represents hundreds of volunteers and tens of thousands of supporters and continues to seek a by-election for Vancouver-Kingsway, and will support any effort undertaken to ensure that what Emerson and Harper did to Canadian voters never happens again in this country.

Emerson meets one - what about the other 46,167?

David Emerson today met with riding constituent Manuel Pereda. The campaign will later today issue a statement on this meeting. According to media reports, Bob Klager, Emerson's Ottawa-based communications advisor, claims that Mr. Pereda's meeting request was the first formal request for a meeting with the peek-a-boo MP.

Reality Check: In fact dozens of requests for meetings have been made through both public and private channels.

A dozen people sitting in David Emerson's office one February afternoon each demanded a meeting with Mr. Emerson. Four of those were arrested. No meeting transpired.

For many weeks various community groups have been trying to get Emerson's attention on their issues, to no avail.

In early March Mike Watkins, one of the campaign's spokespersons, made a formal behind the scenes request for a respectful and private meeting between Emerson and representatives of the community. Despite a series of discussions with Colin Metcalfe, who was later named Chief of Staff to the regional Minister's office, Emerson never accepted the meeting request.

On March 14th the Campaign issued a formal request for Emerson's participation in a town hall meeting. This invitation was flatly rejected.

Residents of Vancouver-Kingsway have gone out of their way to seek an audience with the hide n' seek MP with no success. If David Emerson can't face his constituents, how can he presume to represent us?

Later this month the Campaign will host the first in a series of town-hall meetings on issues of importance to our community. If Mr. Emerson won't do his job, the people will just have to do it for him.

Hey, Mr. Postman

It turns out that you can't send four foot by eight foot sized postcards for free to your Member of Parliament, but that didn't stop riding residents from expressing their views. Yesterday two giant messages bearing the signatures of scores of Vancouver-Kingsway voters were sent to Stephen Harper and David Emerson. Follow the link for more!

Seniors Day

Today, Tuesday May 2nd, is Senior's Day at David Emerson's constituency office at 2148 Kingsway (just to the east of Victoria). From 10am through noon, on the first Tuesday of each month, the office puts on "Senior's Day".

Unsurprisingly, there are many seniors who support The Campaign to De-Elect David Emerson and who are very concerned over the state of democracy in our country. We expect that concerned seniors will be in regular attendance.

This morning The Campaign to De-Elect David Emerson will also staff an information table outside Emerson's office. Come say hello!

Democracy Watch requests update from Ethics Commissioner

Complaints to Ethics Commissioner Bernard Shapiro still outstanding - democracy watchdog follows up on complaints made in March against Stephen Harper, David Emerson, Paul Martin and Belinda Stronach.

Democracy Watch’s position is that while Belinda Stronach may have violated the MPs Code, the actions of Paul Martin, David Emerson and Stephen Harper were violations of the Public Office Holders Code, given that all three were members of Cabinet when the party-switching actions occurred.

Democracy Watch’s complaints call for an investigation of whether the party-switchers, and the Prime Ministers who rewarded the party switching, violated the requirements in the both codes to act “with honesty” and “uphold the highest ethical standards” in ways that increase “public trust and confidence” in their integrity and the integrity of the federal government. More >

Clearly public trust and confidence in our government and political leaders has been eroded. What's interesting about Democracy Watch's complaint is both the different angle taken plus the request that Shapiro essentially recuse himself and delegate his decision making authority to a provincial ethics commissioner.

We suggest Manitoba take on the task, as it is a jurisdiction that aims to become the first in Canada to pass a floor-crossing prohibition law.

Sign Theft

Apparently someone out there supports David Emerson, but he might not want those sorts of friends as some have decided that petty theft is a good way to show support for the minister without a mandate.

Sign theft has been an unfortunate regular occurrence, but is a clear indication that our campaign is having a real impact. The campaign wishes to remind supporters that any missing sign will be happily replaced ASAP - just fill out our sign request form again and we'll get right on it.

Two weeks ago the Campaign learned someone posing as a Vancouver city official attempted to intimidate residents who have been showing their support for our campaign to bring back real democracy to Vancouver-Kingsway. The City would like to know the identity of the imposter, and if the individual is identified, the Campaign will ask the city to consider if charges should be laid.

The Campaign to De-Elect David Emerson will recommend that charges are pressed against any person discovered to be stealing campaign signs, and we suggest that law-abiding Conservatives should do a better job of policing their own supporters.

Conservative Party won't apologize for inappropriate remarks

On Tuesday this week an official of the Conservative Party, Peter Appleton - president of the New Westminster--Coquitlam Conservative riding association - hurled what can at best be called a xenophobic insult at pro-democracy campaigners assembled at an event featuring the Prime Minister.

The Campaign to De-Elect David Emerson two days ago called for an official policy from Appleton, his riding association, the Conservative Party and the Prime Minister. No apology has yet been offered. When will the Prime Minister and his party do the right thing and stand up for Canada? Racism has no place in our country.

Pro-Democracy Protest Friday- Downtown

On Friday (April 21) at high noon The Campaign to De-Elect David Emerson will hold the latest in its series of public awareness protests at the corner of Burrard and Georgia. We'll hold fort in front of the Hyatt Regency hotel where David Emerson will be holed up, speaking at a luncheon inside.

  • When: We'll gather starting at 11:30 and hold the fort through 2pm, Friday April 21 - join us for as long or as little as you can.
  • Where: Corner of Burrard and Georgia, downtown Vancouver, directly in front of the Hyatt Regency Hotel

If you've got an 'old hat' kicking around, bring that along too!

Emerson wants out of politics?

Yesterday's local Metro news daily ran a story suggesting Emerson may want out of politics:

Emerson says he is not content being in the Conservative cabinet and would like to get out of politics if he could, according to a Liberal confidante.

“He said he would have quit by now but his wife wouldn’t let him”, a source who chatted with the minister over lunch

In this morning's Toronto Star the previously unidentified source was named as Jay Epworth, Emerson's former legislative assistant.

Epworth, asked to evaluate Emerson's remarks to him, said, "I don't think he was feeding me a line or anything. He was saying what he felt."

Emerson's communications director unsurprisingly denies the conversation took place.

Regardless of how comfortable or not Mr. Emerson is in his position, the Campaign's position remains the same: democracy and due process were denied the people of Vancouver-Kingsway, and the votes of all Canadians have been devalued by the actions of Emerson and the Prime Minister. They can set things right by promptly calling a by-election for Vancouver-Kingsway.

De-Elect Emerson Campaign calls for apology from Conservative Party

For immediate release

VANCOUVER-KINGSWAY Wednesday April 19, 2006 -- On Tuesday April 18 volunteers of the Campaign to De-Elect David Emerson carried on a respectful protest outside a media event put on for Prime Minister Harper. Since February 6th, thousands of Canadians from across the country have called upon Stephen Harper to do the right thing and require David Emerson to resign and run in a by-election in Vancouver-Kingsway.

Yesterday over a dozen Canadian citizens took time off work and from families to attend Mr. Harper's event and repeat our call for a by-election.

A number of supporters of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister Harper also attended. The two groups by and large co-existed behind the same barricades in a respectful manner.

However, during the protest a Stephen Harper supporter and Conservative Party member, Peter Appleton, told two critics of David Emerson, who happen to be immigrants and Canadian citizens, to get out of the country. Appleton said "why don't you just go back to the country where you came from?"

Appleton is a Conservative Party official, duly elected to his post by members of the party in his riding. Appleton wore around his neck a name badge identifying himself as the president of the New Westminster--Coquitlam Conservative Electoral District Association.

Appleton's comments are completely unacceptable and are deeply offensive to millions of Canadians.

The Campaign to De-Elect David Emerson calls upon Mr. Appleton, his riding association, the Conservative Party and the Prime Minister to do the right thing and apologize for these hurtful and jingoistic remarks made by one of its party officials.

And while the party is writing apology letters, the Campaign calls upon the same courtesy from Vancouver--Kingsway MP David Emerson, who on Saturday last week called his critics - our campaigners and supporters - "locusts".

Campaign steps on Harper's message

Today folks from the Campaign to De-Elect David Emerson walked all over Prime Minister Stephen Harper's attempt to ignore the continuing call from Canadians for David Emerson to resign and run in a by-election.

While the PM attended a tightly scripted event at a community centre in Burnaby, complete with a teleprompter and imported supporters, volunteers from our campaign made sure that Harper and the assembled press heard our message: By-Election Now!

Answering the inevitable questions from reporters on the Harper-Emerson affair, the Prime Minister again contemptuously dismissed his critics, calling us 'the same 10 faces'. Previously Harper has labelled opposition to his unprincipled decision as "superficial", later he labelled critics as "partisans". Neither attempts to deflect attention away from his own role in the sordid affair have worked, so now he's attempting to portray opposition as limited in scope. The PM couldn't be more wrong.

Following the event we issued a press release to national media providing the uninformed Prime Minister with some important facts - part of that release reads as follows:

Mr. Harper choses to avoid the uncomfortable truth because his numbers don't add up. Recognizing that the Prime Minister is a busy man, in order to help him with his math we've provided this handy fact sheet:
  • 46,168 voters cast a ballot in the last election;
  • 0 got what they voted for;
  • 2 men, Stephen Harper and David Emerson, changed the outcome of the election and neither of them live in the riding.

Emerson has lost his mandate to represent our riding, and was never given a mandate from the people to govern. 37,489 (81.2%) people in this riding voted for candidates representing parties other than the Conservative Party.

Since this issue broke on February 6th, Canadians have come together like never before - just look at the numbers:

  • Now 10 weeks into this issue, Canadians are still talking about the Emerson affair.

  • Dozens of protests involving thousands of Canadians have been held.

  • Over the past five weeks almost 1,000 "De-Elect David Emerson" lawn signs have sprung up on lawns all over Vancouver-Kingsway, the greater Vancouver area, and across Canada.

  • 20,689 Canadians have 'signed' an on-line petition calling on Emerson to resign.

  • On April 2nd almost one thousand Canadians marched in a "Walk for Democracy" down Kingsway to demand that Emerson resign and run in a by-election.

  • Thousands of Canadians have registered on-line to keep informed and abreast of the issue

  • Ipsos Reid, in a February poll of BC electors, indicated that 3 of 4 voters, even in strongly Conservative-leaning areas of the province, favoured a by-election for Vancouver-Kingsway. That's some 1,370,022 of the 1,826,696 BC voters in the last election who would like to see Emerson run in a by-election.

Even the Prime Minister can't ignore hundreds of thousands or millions of Canadians forever.

The De-Elect David Emerson Campaign pledges to carry on the fight for real democracy in Canada. We call upon the Prime Minister to do the right thing -- "stand up for Canada" and require David Emerson resign from cabinet, caucus and parliament, and run again as a Conservative in Vancouver-Kingsway in a by-election to be called promptly.

Maybe Mr. Harper could find the energy to add a sixth priority to his list of five? Start showing some respect for Canadian voters and our democracy.

Since news of today's protest hit the airwaves, sign requests have increased dramatically. If you'd like to plant a De-Elect David Emerson sign on your lawn or your apartment window, click here to sign up!

Emerson critics "locusts"?

Invoking a biblical reference, our MP for Vancouver-Kingsway calls tens of thousands of citizens who oppose his cavalier switch from one party to another locusts.

"It's just that every once in awhile the locusts descend on me and it creates situations that are a little abnormal, but I carry on with my work," said Emerson, adding he respects his critics. More >

What's more disrespectful? David Emerson and Stephen Harper's attack on democracy? Or citizens expressing their disdain for such attacks?

Sunday public awareness event

From 11am through 1pm De-Elect David Emerson Campaign volunteers will be holding a public awareness protest downtown in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery, on the Georgia street side, in-between Hornby and Howe. Featured will be our giant four foot by eight foot postcards to David Emerson and Stephen Harper - come and add your signature and message!

Weather and foot traffic permitting, these intrepid souls may later venture to the Robson street side of the Art Gallery to the south. Rumour has it that some sort of imaginative rain cover will protect both protesters and postcards alike.

Neither rain nor sleet nor Sam Sullivan shall deter us from our mission. Who knows, maybe BC Attorney General Wally Oppal will stop by again to give us a piece of his mind.

In brief...

Signs, signs, everywhere a sign

Reports of missing signs continue to come in, leading us to wonder: is David Emerson wandering the riding again?

If you are missing a sign, or if you requested one and its been a while and you've not seen it show up as yet, please send us a note to info@emersoncampaign.ca with your location and contact details and we'll get right on it.

South Asian community seeks Emerson's resignation

De-Elect Emerson Campaign steering committee member Mike Watkins yesterday was a guest on broadcaster Gurpreet Singh's open-line talk show on Radio India. According to Mike, the concensus within the Punjabi-speaking community is that David Emerson must resign, and that specific floor-crossing prohibition legislation should be introduced and passed by Parliament.

Postcards for Democracy

Yesterday the De-Elect Emerson Campaign team held a petition signing event in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery downtown. These giant four foot by eight foot postcard-petitions will be heading to Ottawa soon to deliver their powerful message.

Emerson De-Election Campaign Heads Downtown

Join us if you can Monday at noon in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery (Georgia and Howe), where we'll be collecting more signatures on giant four foot by eight foot postcards to Prime Minister Harper and the Minister without moral authority, David Emerson.

Where: We'll start in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery, but depending on weather we may move to more sheltered ground at the south end of the Art Gallery complex near Robson and Howe/Hornby.

When: 11:30 am through 1:30pm (approximately), Monday April 10th

De-Elect Emerson signs having impact

Its been brought to our attention that someone out there in Vancouver-Kingsway is worried about the almost 1,000 De-Elect David Emerson lawn signs that dot the landscape. Apparently some jokester has been trying to intimidate lawn sign owners by impersonating a city official - the perpetrator is leaving a partial copy of what appears to be an actual city letter issued during the last election. More on this story here.

Bottom line: people may place De-Elect Emerson signs on their private property to their hearts content. Some of us have two or three! If you have had a sign go missing, please contact us and we'll make sure you get a replacement ASAP!

April 08, 2006

De-Elect Emerson Event Meet-Up

When: Noon through approximately 2pm Saturday April 8th
Where: Main and 26th and the general area around there.
What: Giant 4 foot by 8 foot postcards addressed to Stephen Harper and David Emerson.

We are collecting signatures on these mammoth postcards to send a BIG message to politicians in Ottawa that we will not stop our fight. The issue is black and white - it was wrong on day one and remains wrong today.

Come help us send a message to Ottawa!
